Favorite Kitchen Tools {Life and Links}

{Life and Links} are my lists for creating the best life between trips, delicious food always, and comfortable and smart travel. It's the stuff that's so good I need to share it with you.

Here's what I want you to know about the things I'm recommending to you:
  • I will only recommend items that I use regularly and that I absolutely LOVE
  • When you buy something with Amazon via Figs and Flights I will get a small commission so THANKS for shopping with me
  • I'd love to hear what you think about something I've recommended! Shoot me an email or tag me on Instagram to show off your favorite new thing.
  • See all of my favorite items using the LIFE tab

This quarantine life has me cooking so much more than usual.

It's also got me evaluating everything. What do I like? What don't I like? What do I need more of? What do I need less of? Which things make me really happy?

In my ongoing effort to cook often and create foods that are fresh and flavorful I've rounded up the kitchen tools that make eating well easier. I've got a ton of gadgets and gismos and these are the best ones that I find myself using frequently.

My favorite kitchen tools!

Mandoline Slicer

I've had crappy mandolin slicers before and the injuries to prove it. Everything changed when I upgraded to this OXO Mandoline Slicer. It is 1000 times safer and better because its food guard properly holds the items so that you can slice efficiently and without injury.

Using a mandoline makes getting uniform slices so easy and quick. I use it most often for radishes, zucchini, and potatoes but the possibilities are endless. I just used it to slice lemons for the first time and they were so pretty, dainty, and perfect for iced tea, a glass of cold water, or for making lemony pasta!

Salad Spinner

This salad spinner is the best. I began with a smaller one and eventually upgraded to the large OXO salad spinner.

Just toss your greens into the spinner, rinse with water, and SPIN SPIN SPIN to clean them. This salad spinner is large enough to hold a full Costco bag of spinach. There's an easy way to lock the lid to keep it closed so you can keep your greens in it in the fridge.

Citrus Squeezer

Squeezing a lemon through your fingers works partially for keeping the seeds out of your food or lemon water. The same method is 100% accurate at detecting little cuts on your hands and burning like hell.

Save the pain and skip the seeds while keeping your fresh lemon intake on the rise with a citrus squeezer.

The trick is to place the lemon, lime, or orange into the squeezer juicy-side down before squeezing. Before you discard the fruit be sure to move it around in the squeezer and give it one more squeeze to get the last of the juice.

Silicone Prep Bowls

These little prep bowls are so useful.

First they are measuring cups. Stuff like honey and peanut butter are so much easier to handle, measure, and get back out of these because they bend and can be squeezed.

Second they come in handy for everything else: getting ingredients ready for cooking, collecting hot tea bags on the coffee table, and sorting the butter popcorn Jelly Bellys while you throw the others away. I use at least one of these bowls every day.

Nesting Measuring Spoons

I love to cook and HATE to wash dishes. If I'm mid-recipe and I don't have the right measuring spoon handy and clean I will can start winging measurements, skipping steps, and/or ruining dinner.

These magnetic, nesting, double sided measuring spoons were a Christmas gift I received many years ago. I love them SO MUCH that I now have two sets.

The oval shaped side works great for getting into your tiny little spice jars. Having two of each measurement is great for getting two different spices into your food without cross contamination or re-washing mid-food prep.

They stack up nice and neat so you don't have to fuss with getting the spoons on and off of a ring and they're easy to find in the gadget drawer.

I hope these tools can help you be more efficient and creative in your kitchen!

Let me know if you've got a favorite kitchen tool that I need to have in addition to these, too. Tag #figsandflightsfavorite and @figsandflights to share your favorites.
