Tried It posts recap my journey with a food or product I've never used before.
I test it out and share the results with you.
About two months ago I finally bought Trader Joe's Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend. Several of my food-loving friends had recommended it to me in recent months. As an everything bagel lover I'm not sure why I hesitated to try this, but I did. The short story is that it's a great blend of flavors that tastes great on just about everything.
Below I'll tell you all about this treasure, what I tried it with, answer some questions, and share my favorite way to use it {recipe} Everything but the Bagel Fried Eggs.
What's in it? The ingredients in this seasoning blend are simple. It's got sesame seeds, sea salt flakes, dried minced garlic, dried minced onion, black sesame seeds, and poppy seeds.
How much does it cost? The jar is $2.99 at Trader Joe's (TJ's).
If you don't have a TJ's store in your neighborhood you can purchase it at an inflated rate on Amazon. I've included the link, below, although you can easily make this blend on your own with the individual ingredients.
What to eat with it? The granules are larger than your typical grains of salt and pepper so it works best on soft foods that the little particles can stick to. My favorites by far eggs and avocado, sometimes both! Check out the captions throughout the photos on this post for inspiration. You'll see eggs scrambled, sunny side up, and hard boiled. Avocados have been smashed onto toast, rice cakes, crackers, and naan before being sprinkled with Everything but the Bagel Seasoning. The possibilities are endless.
How much should be used? The flavors are great but pretty mild. I use at least 3 - 4 scientific pinch-fulls to start or about 1/2 Tablespoon for 1 serving. Often times, like with scrambled eggs, I'll put it in the food while cooking then again on top once it's finished.
Do you need to use any other seasoning? Yes. While the mixture's got salt, garlic, and onion flavors it doesn't have anything resembling pepper. I use the seasoning alongside black pepper every time.
Should you try Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend? If you regularly eat savory breakfasts and want to jazz things up a bit, yes! This seasoning blend isn't life changing but it sure is simple to use and all-purpose. I'm thinking about taking it on my long weekend trip to Austin since we're staying in an AirBNB with a kitchen.
What's the best way to use it? By far the best way to use Everything but the Bagel has been underneath fried eggs.
Rather than topping fried eggs with the seasoning the key is to put the Everything but the Bagel Seasoning it into the pan before the eggs. The seasoning provides a savory and crunchy crust under the eggs while the garlic, onion, and salt flavors are all warmed up and incorporated into the eggs while they're cooking. Everything but the Bagel Fried Eggs
Serves 1
Ingredients: 2 eggs Everything but the Bagel Sesame Seasoning Blend Cooking oil: coconut oil, EVOO, or butter Black pepper Also Needed: Frying pan or small cast iron skillet Lid Directions: With the stove on medium heat, melt your cooking oil. Add roughly 1/2 Tablespoon of Everything but the Bagel Seasoning blend to the pan, then add both eggs. Top the pan with a lid and cook until the clear in the egg whites turns white or until the yolks are cooked to your liking. I prefer my yolk's just when they turn pink and are still runny or "dippy." Add black pepper to the eggs just before they're finished.
While the eggs look plain from above, the underside is spotted with seasoning and bursting with crunchy flavors.
I'll keep experimenting with this seasoning, I have a great idea for using it with a grilled cheese sandwich, my FAVORITE.
Let me know if you try my Everything but the Bagel Fried Eggs and like them, or if you've got a favorite way to use the seasoning that I've got to try!
