The Kitchen Remodel

11/20/2020

Figs and Flights {at home} is back!

We toured most of "the house with the fig tree" back in the early months of quarantine and now we're back with an exciting new project.

We're moving back to Hawaii!

We're CRAZY! We know.

We don't know when we'll make the move so in the meantime we're doing a HUGE project to increase the resale value (aka MO' MONAY) of our house.

We are remodeling the kitchen. To see what the kitchen looks like currently check out the photos here or watch the video there.

Full plan.

Bryce and his brother are doing this project together. Bryce is handy and knows a ton about tools but he isn't a pro. Brother Brandon is a home-builder/house flipper in Texas, he's the pro! See NexGen Custom homes to follow his spectacular work.

Selfishly I want us (Bryce and I) to have some experience in remodeling a kitchen so that the one in my next house, in Hawaii, can be spectacular, duh.

Most of this remodel is not what I would chose if we were staying in the house. It's more on trend and generic than my taste because it's all for SUZY HOMEBUYER or BILLY HOMEBUYER, whoever likes the kitchen most!

I want a pink Smeg fridge, Suzy gets a Stainless Steel Samsung. I want a gas stove and a pot filler, Suzy gets an electric stove and schleps the big pot over from the sink. Ya' with me?

What our kitchen looks like now
We're keeping the layout of the room the same and just updating it all: cabinets, countertops, appliances, and floors.

A secondary goal is to make the kitchen feel bigger, less cramped, and more open. We're doing that a few ways:
  • Getting the counter depth fridge that our kitchen should have always had
  • Swapping out a few upper cabinets for shelves and open shelves
  • Cutting a 3 inches from the uppers on either side next
  • Adding a trash-can-hiding-cabinet to open up walking space

The appliances.

We went with all Samsung stainless steel.

The fridge was the lynchpin: we needed one counter depth, without water on the front, with split doors. Samsung had it and we went from there.

We found them all Home Depot but purchased directly from Samsung since they give a military discount!

We're getting a microwave! We haven't had one since we moved into the house.

Backsplash.

After looking at many black and white tiles we just decided on the backsplash. We went with the tile I'd fallen in love with during our first trip to Home Depot for this project.

A display a Home Depot - I love the backsplash!

Cabinets and hardware.

Nothing I've watched on HGTV prepared me for cold warehouses where you buy things like cabinets. What an experience.

We're doing blue/grey lowers and white uppers with white countertops.

I was deciding between flat black or gold hardware and we just settled on gold!

We'll take the lowers on the left and the uppers on the right, please.

A smaller, thinner, white version of these shelves will replace the upper cabinets on either side of our stove.

A picture of a computer screen from the warehouse "store." The far left lower cabinet is an edge/diagonal situation we're copying in an awkward spot.

Floors.

This decision I saved for very last. I wanted something grey to compliment the bathroom floor and something plain, for sure.

Since we've got beautiful and original hardwood floors everywhere else I wanted to stay completely away from natural wood  flooring.

GOODBYE PARQUET FLOORS!

Countertop.

Quartz. Named Snow White.

No, not because we are also named white. No, not because I love Disney. Because it's white and plain-ish without being boring.

This was my second choice. First choice was a little more iridescent but sizing was wrong.

Lighting.

Our ceilings are low which really limited our selection. These two were cute, coordinating, and interesting!

Drawings.

I am so excited to see these come to life!

What comes next.

We're heading to Texas to spend Thanksgiving with Brandon + his family, then Bryce and Brandon come back here together to do the remodel in early December.

Stay tuned for more Figs and Flights {at home} progress.

I never considered cutting 3-inches from the uppers. I need to get new cabinets cut into my kitchen. I'll have to consider getting a contractor to check my cabinets and check dimensions.
