The Bathroom & Bedrooms BEFORE AND AFTER

6/12/2020

Welcome back to Figs and Flights {at home}. We bought our house in Seattle in 2014 and have renovated and updated it along the way.

This blog post covers the bathroom & bedrooms BEFORE AND AFTER. There's a video tour of these rooms, too.

See more BEFORE AND AFTER blog posts of the kitchen and the phone nook and the living & dining rooms. We'll complete the {at home} content next week with the green room & back yard.

Today we're digging into the bedrooms and bathrooms! Obviously these spaces are the most important for comfort, function, daily use, and sleep.

The Bedrooms

The bedrooms' small closets aren't ideal but have taught us to be more strategic and intentional about buying and storing unnecessary things.

Both bedrooms have odd layouts due to shape and corner windows keeping furniture layout options limited, we've done the best we can!

The Renovations

  1. Refinish the hardwood floors
  2. Repair settling cracks in the ceilings
  3. Paint the walls
  4. Replace baseboards & heating vents
  5. Move & replace electrical outlets, light switches, and covers
  6. Replacing lighting

AFTER: The same view now. Notice the lack of closet doors/drawers in the hallway. We moved the access into the bathroom.

The Spare Room

The spare room (second bedroom) has changed the very least of all the rooms in the house. The layout offers very little flexibility for more or larger furniture so we painted, redid the floors, and replaced the baseboards and lighting.

This room stores our suitcases, travel pillows, and carry on personal bags. We house visitors here, store junk, stage all packing, and sneak away for naps or reading.

We've discussed our scratch off travel world map (via Amazon) before and the lamp was recommended by one of my favorite home bloggers Young House Love. It's from Target but is no longer sold.

BEFORE: The 2nd bedroom was green and fit for a little girl!

AFTER: The 2nd bedroom is now blue, cute and just perfect for reading, napping, or working in and for visiting guests!

DURING: Starting repairs on the ceiling and ripping up the baseboards.

DURING: Ceiling repaired and walls primed. Before paint & refinished floors.

AFTER: TA-DA! Finished and ready for furniture. The paint color is the same as the dining room (after).

AFTER: This view shows the lack of options for putting furniture anywhere over here!
Picture
AFTER: The spare room is so cute and cozy. I love to nap or read here.

The Master Bedroom

Our master bedroom is such a sanctuary. I HATE a TV in the bedroom and wanted the feeling of a spring garden in our room, hence the light green walls and colorful, floral bedding.

A really nice touch are the velvet blackout curtains (via Amazon). Ours are teal green and 52" W x 63" L.

BEFORE: The master bedroom was blue and filled with HUGE furniture.
Picture
AFTER: The master is now green and laid out totally differently.

DURING: The master bedroom after baseboards were ripped off, before floors were refinished.

DURING: Master bedroom with new paint and floor refinishing underway.
Picture
AFTER: The master bedroom as seen directly after walking in.
Picture
AFTER: The small closet is awkwardly located behind the door. It surely has taught us a ton about efficiency!

AFTER: The master bedroom now. We've moved the bed around at least four times and this is the FINAL ANSWER.

The Bathroom!

When I first visited the open house on this house I didn't even enter the bathroom! The photos don't do justice to just how ugly it was. Not only were there tiles of varying sizes, shapes, and patterns everywhere the layout was also very awkward and the sink was so low it was essentially kid sized.

Renovation project number ONE was the bathroom. We hired a contractor and tackled:
  • Swapping the toilet and sink location
  • Removing ALL tiles
  • Removing one of the two closets and changing the access to the other closet from the hallway into the bathroom
  • Replacing the standard door with a pocket door
  • NEW EVERYTHING: toilet, sink, tub, lighting, paint, bead board, etc.

We LOVE a Squatty Potty (via Amazon) and recommend  one in every bathroom in your house! Many of the bathroom fixtures are from Rejuvenation. I LOVE their stuff.

BEFORE: This was the only bathroom photo in the MLS listing. I appreciated the warning before coming to the open house!
Picture
AFTER: The bathroom now is calm, comfortable, and so much better.
Picture
BEFORE: A better look at the bigger and even more patterned floor tiles.
Picture
BEFORE: Far left shows a glimpse of the closet we moved. Plus MORE TILE!
Picture
BEFORE: Tile alllll around the shower.
Picture
BEFORE: Tiny little patterned tile intersected the others!
Picture
AFTER: A much less colorful bathroom!
Picture
AFTER: Can you imagine a closet squeezed between the sink and the wall to the left? Nope.
Picture
AFTER: We were very cautious with our tile selection after the CRAZY tile before.
Thank you for taking the BEFORE AND AFTER journey with me!
