The Figs and Flights motto is "life fueled by food and travel." {Life and links} are my lists for creating the very best life between trips, delicious foods, and comfortable/smart travels. Themes vary seasonally, include tips and tricks, and my favorite things. It's the stuff that's so good I need to share it with you. Here's what you should to know about the things that I recommend:
For the second year in a row I am so excited to share the Best Books I've read with my bookworm friends. (Waves enthusiastically.) Let's connect on Goodreads to share book recommendations year-round. There's no better place to read than on a long flight to somewhere far, far away but in 2020 most of my reading was done at home. Here are the very best best books I've read in 2020. The links take you to Amazon where you can get a proper book or an ebook. You can also find these books at your local bookstore or library. Open Book by Jessica SimpsonI'm a life-long fan of Jessica Simpson! While I typically borrow books from the library I actually purchased - and PRE-ORDERED - this one. This book will shock you with Jessica's absolute honesty. Her journey beings with becoming a child star, then a pioneer of reality TV, followed by a fashion mogul, and finally into sobriety. It's an inspiring journey and you'll love the details of her personal life, success, and the details of her celebrity ex-boyfriends! Beyond Belief by Susan Tive & Cami OstmanAs a 14 year veteran of Catholic school this book was a breath of fresh air. You'll meet a handful of women in the inner workings of several religious groups. They explain a ceremony, day, or ritual where they just don't get it but everyone else seems to participate with enthusiasm. This is a must read for anyone on the feminist spectrum or who was brought up in a religious community. I Forgot to Die by Khalil RafatiI've now read this addiction memoir TWICE! A true testament to Khalil's work. You'll follow Khalil's story as a child of immigrants in Ohio to some sunny success in LA where he's washing cars and running errands for A list celebrities before his addictions totally consume his life. It's graphic, terrifying, real, raw, and eventually inspiring. He says over and over again that if HE can overcome addiction then you (and I) can do anything, it's not too late. Untamed by Glennon DoyleEveryone I know Instagrammed this book over the summer. I didn't know so many people were reading books! Were they just into the gorgeous, colorful, and sparkly cover? Untamed is a must-read for every woman. Then we should pass it on to the men. Glennon's writing will crack your brain open and explain things you've always wondered or worried about. She sheds a light on so many situations and issues in our daily lives that just don't need to be applied in the same way continually. You'll root for her, grow with her, and look at your own life through new and UNTAMED eyes. Disney MapsI couldn't resist this one! This book contains maps of the movies you know and love, plus tidbits of info on each movie and an index of characters for each. It's gorgeous and makes a great gift for a Disney person in your life. I've paged though the book myself many times. My friend's kids grab it every time they visit! And we've utilized it a time or two to remember a character's name! the sun and her flowersAnother very instagrammable book, the sun and her flowers is made of short little snippets. I try to read just one page per day. The inspirational messages mimic nature and life. If you're into introspection or gratitude this is one for you. The Daily StoicAnother page per day book, The Daily Stoic will bring you some daily wisdom. Think about stillness or the eye of a storm. This book will help you with yourself while the world and craziness swirl on around you. If you didn't have this book before 2020 began do yourself a favor and buy it before 2021 begins! Just one page per day will give you insight into ancient stoic wisdom that's always somehow relevant. I've shared this book before in Mellow Mornings {life and links}. I hope you enjoyed my Best Books of 2020 list! Please share this list with your favorite bookworm friends! Let me know if you and I share any favorites.
