Pittsburgh, PA - Part 2 Fav 5 {Travel Guide}

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is my hometown and I was lucky to visit "the Burgh" not once, but twice, this summer! During my first trip I visited some of my old favorite spots like PNC Park and Eat 'N Park, saw some new-to-me places like Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, and ate like a Queen thanks to dippy eggs and pierogies.

Kennywood Park - Fav 5 {Travel Guide}

8/11/2017

Kennywood is a long standing amusement park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and a local favorite for both children and adults alike. Now filled with roller coasters, water rides, restaurants, games, and a "land" just for kids, Kennywood began as a trolley/amusement park in 1898. That means even the Grandmas and "Paps", as we say in Pittsburgh, visited Kennywood during the summers of their childhood.

Pittsburghers my age spent the summers of the 1990's going to the park as many times as possible then proudly wearing all of the paper admission bracelets (like the ones you now expect to see in a beer garden or at an outdoor concert) as a badge of honor until our Moms finally cut them from our wrists!

Even if you didn't grow up in Pittsburgh you will LOVE Kennywood. It's located just under 30 minutes from downtown. Parking at the park is plentiful with options for either free and far away or $7 and much closer to the entry. Go for a day and see what our hometown gem is all about. Now there are a few things you should know before you go.

Kennywood is unlike any other amusement park

Kennywood is truly one of a kind and was, until very recently, a family owned park. Forget anything you may know about Disney parks, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, and Six Flags- the big guys. We're small and quaint and old. We've got an antique carousel, 100 year old wooden roller coasters, and hand cut French fries.

I love the sounds, colors, and lights of an old carousel!

Flights to Pittsburgh, Figs Soon!

Last year I'd traveled more than in any previous year of my life. It was awesome and exhausting and wonderful. The trips of 2016 included:

International
  • Greece - Bryce and I went to (the city of) Athens and the island of Mykonos, eating gyros, fresh seafood, and baklava all the while.
  • Italy - with my husband and my parents. We visited Rome, Florence, Sorrento, the Almafi Coast, Sicily, and Venice.

Domestic
  • California - twice to Southern California for visiting family and, of course, Disneyland and Universal Studios.
  • Colorado - my very first time! I stayed in Denver, visited the Denver Botanic Gardens,  and caught a concert at Red Rocks Ampitheater.
  • Hawaii - our first trip back to the islands after moving away 3 years prior, we went to Oahu and visited our favorite spots including the Battleship Missouri, Leonard's Bakery for Malasadas, many beaches, restaurants, and hikes.
  • Oregon - a long, laid-back weekend in Portland eating, drinking, and hiking.
  • Washington - although I live in Seattle I made trips within the state to the George Ampitheater in George, WA for camping and 3 consecutive Dave Matthews Band concerts; to Leavenworth, WA for a long weekend and plenty of Bavarian charm; to Tri-Cities, WA for an annual wine tasting trip.

While last year was KILLER for collecting passport stamps and airline miles it left me with no time to visit my hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Sorry, Pittsburgh, Italy needed me!

Pittsburgh, PA - Part 1 Fav 5 {Travel Guide}

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is my hometown. What would one's blog be without tips for what to do, see, and eat in their own stomping grounds?

Pittsburgh is in the Southwest corner of PA. It's not far from the West Virginia and Ohio borders. Known as the Steel City and the City of Bridges, Pittsburgh's life blood lies is the three rivers which meet at the city's center. Regardless of which direction you're flying in from you're sure to spot a river.

It's important to mention that Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's two large cities, are nearly 300 miles apart from one another. While within the same state, the cities are seemingly worlds apart. Each has it's own sports teams, vernacular, and favorite sandwiches: Philly's Cheesesteaks vs Pittsburgh's Primanti's Brothers Sandwiches which include French fries and Cole slaw inside the slices of bread.

Pittsburgh here we come! Tonight my husband and I will take two flights to get us across the country to my hometown for a week long visit. It's been almost a year and a half since I've been back home and this summertime trip is long overdue.

Bagheera, our cat, is less than thrilled to be left behind in Seattle but is always excited to see a bag to jump into. Hopefully I can continue my ongoing trend of carry on bags only later today!
